This large gomphid is a common sight on small ponds, lakes, and rivers. It typically perches with the abdomen high in the air to avoid the sun. It is a member of the clubtails, which is obvious from the end of the abdomen. It is widespread throughout subtropical Asia. It is found in Pokhara and the Terai areas from monsoon through October.
Two other Ictinogomphus species found in Nepal are I. kishori and I. peritenax.
